Customization Story:
In the not too distant past one of our clients chose to leverage MOSS 2007 Enterprise Edition and was planning their intranet content. The search capabilities of SharePoint offered a critical benefit that would help them be more timely in answering questions from their customers regarding invoicing details. For this particular situation, SharePoint search was 'asked' to go look at (crawl) billing related details for the past several years. SharePoint Search was pointed to the repository where the data was being stored and the resulting search content was returned in a manner that made it quick and easy to help customers confirm receipt of goods and review billing amounts and date details.

Sometimes the benefit is internal and reduces time to market; but in this instance it allows for a customer service level that supports the needs of the client while reducing the need to expand their customer service staff. The indexing of content was scheduled for incremental updates daily with a monthly full crawl to refresh the Searchable data - which led to happier customers and more productive staff.
The Moral of the Story:
Crawl with SharePoint & when you Seek you Will find.
Search crawls can deliver big benefits with .pdf files (for example) when previously unsearchable content becomes searchable. Consider using filters to search different document types to create a more searchable environment for your user community. Also, look at the types of search that will deliver the fastest and most productive results. Advanced Search can be customized to offer different types of search that save time and deliver results that might otherwise be missed in an enterprise search that returns many pages of results and requires extensive searching within search results. Consider enhancing customer search on your internet site as a boost in customer service. This is especially beneficial if you have a large selection of products & services with different features and specifications.
